Which Resin Materials Can I Use for Casting?
Are you new to the world of resin casting and are wondering what your options are? Or perhaps you are more experienced at resin casting and are looking to experiment with new materials?
Resin is a composite blend that has a number of uses, being cast solid, hollow or applied as a surface coating. Resin is able to mimic the look of stone and metal but at a much more affordable cost. It can be used for large-scale sculptures when reinforced with fibreglass or in smaller scale casting projects such as industrial prototypes, prop making and in the production of models, figures and toys.
At Alec Tiranti, we offer a wide range of different resin materials, all with their own unique properties. Here, we shall outline some of the resin materials that can be used for casting to give you a better idea of the options you have for your resin casting project.
Plaster Polymer is a non-hazardous acrylic co-polymer solution used to give a stronger, non-porous and weather resistant finish when combined with plaster. Castings made with the Polymer offer the ease and speed of working with plaster and the finished strength and durability of a resin. Polymer can also be used in combination with fibreglass for large exterior castings.
Polyester resin is a diverse material that has many uses, making it imperative to many different manufacturing projects. There are a range of different kinds of polyester resin casting materials, including clear casting resin, G P resin, multi-purpose resin and gel coat resin. Each kind of polyester resin has its own individual properties and strengths, making it useful for different kinds of projects.
Polyurethane resin is most commonly used for the casting of model kits, figures, foundry tooling and pattern making. One of the advantages of working with polyurethane resin is that it is a very fast working material, with easy 1:1 mixing. Polyurethane resin has a low odour and also low viscosity which makes it ideal for filling intricate moulds.
An epoxy resin is used for casting, embedding, cold enamelling and coating on your project. As it is a self-levelling and non-shrinking material, it will adhere to most surfaces. Some other advantages of epoxy resin are that it is has excellent resistance to moisture and chemicals as well as good electrical properties and a long shelf life.
